😸 ChatGPT: OptimizingLanguage Models for Dialogue
OpenAI trained a model called ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer followup questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.
ChatGPT is a sibling model to InstructGPT, which is trained to follow an instruction in a prompt and provide a detailed response.

📋 Billboards Are Watching
Companies that sell advertising in public spaces use face analysis and personal data to match ads with potential viewers in real time, civil-liberties watchdog Big Brother UK detailed in a new report.
The report compiles applications and case studies drawn from product summaries and blog posts published by ad-tech companies.
Quividi, a French maker of smart signs, offers a system that analyzes up to 100 faces at a time, identifying their gender, age, and mood along with the direction they’re facing and how long they look at the screen.
🏠 Building Airbnb Categories with ML and Human-in-the-Loop
Airbnb recently flipped the travel search experience on its head by having their inventory dictate user destinations. In the new scheme, users aren't asked where they want to go. Instead, they're presented with categories of destination types. It may sound simple but there's a lot going on behind the scenes to make it work. This first post in a series explores how ML is used to build the listings and solve related tasks.
🖼️ Apple optimizes Stable Diffusion on Apple silicon
Apple has significantly cut the time it takes to generate images from Stable Diffusion on Apple silicon. It's notable that the world's most valuable company has tacitly adopted the world's most widely distributed (and quite controversial) generative image model, and perhaps a sign of things to come - release the weights of your model, and perhaps vast companies will expend engineering resources to make it run more efficiently on their hardware.
🪦 Cryptocurrency Unsafe for AI
The collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX threatens funding for some teams devoted to AI safety.
FTX, the $32 billion exchange that plunged into bankruptcy last month amid allegations of fraud, had given or promised more than $530 million to over 70 AI-related organizations, The New York Times reported. Much of that money may have to be returned.
FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried and his associates used the exchange’s holdings to dole out grants or investments to AI-related startups, labs, and think tanks, many of them focused on AI safety. People associated with these groups anonymously expressed concerns that their funding would be clawed back in bankruptcy proceedings.
