📚 OpenAI unveils model that can summarize books of any length
OpenAI has developed an AI model that can summarize books of arbitrary length. A fine-tuned version of the research lab’s GPT-3, the model works by first summarizing small sections of a book and then summarizing those summaries into higher-level summaries, following a paradigm OpenAI calls “recursive task decomposition.”
☔ DeepMind develops AI that can forecast the weather
DeepMind, the artificial intelligence research arm of Google LLC parent Alphabet Inc., today detailed a new project in collaboration with the Met Office (the U.K.’s national weather service) that seeks to harness machine learning to generate better weather forecasts. The researchers involved in the initiative developed an AI system capable of forecasting rainfall up to two hours ahead of time. According to DeepMind, 50 meteorologists from the Met Office who compared the AI system with existing forecasting methods rated it as their first choice in 89% of cases.
🏈 NFL Big Data Bowl 2022
National Football League (NFL) coaches spend hours studying how to improve field position and score points before a big win. While both offensive and defensive team plays have been thoroughly examined, “special team” plays (e.g. punts, kickoffs, field goals and extra points) remain understudied.
In this Kaggle competition, you’ll quantify what happens on special teams plays. You might create a new special teams metric, quantify team or individual strategies, rank players, or even something we haven’t considered.
🐯 Tiger VS Humans: Predicting animal conflict with machine learning
Researchers with Singapore Management University, Google Research Industry, and the Wildlife Conservation Trust, have worked out how to use neural nets to predict the chance of human and animal conflict in wild areas. They tested out their technique in Bramhapuri Forest Division in india (2.8 tigers and 19,000 humans per square kilometer).
