🖼️ A new standard dataset for images: PASS
ImageNet is a multi-million image dataset that is fundamental to many computer vision research projects. But ImageNet also has known problems, like including lots of pictures of people. Researchers with Oxford University have built PASS, a large-scale image dataset meant to avoid many of the problems found in ImageNet. PASS contains 1.4 million distinct images. PASS is short for Pictures without humAns for Self-Supervision.

A Chinese government ministry has published a new set of ethics guidelines for the use of AI within the country. The guidelines were published by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, and are interesting because they give us a sense for how a large state tries to operationalize ethics in a rapidly evolving industry.

🚗 Only Safe Drivers Get Self-Driving
The beta-test version of Tesla’s latest self-driving update will be available only to drivers who have demonstrated safe driving. The car collects data about five factors: forward collision warnings per 1,000 miles, hard braking, aggressive turning, unsafe following, and forced disengagement of self-driving features when the car determines that drivers aren’t paying attention.
🚘 GM reveals Ultra Cruise ‘hands-free’ system
Dubbed Ultra Cruise, the new system uses sensors like cameras, radars, and lidar to control a vehicle’s steering, acceleration, and braking. GM says the system can be used on 2 million miles of paved roads and in “95 percent” of driving scenarios. Though which vehicles will get Ultra Cruise is still a mystery; GM says it will be available in a handful of premium vehicles in 2023, though the automaker wouldn’t disclose specific models.
🎨 Google Just Used Artificial Intelligence To Restore Old Paintings Burned During WW2
Google's artificial intelligence achieved the feat by being "trained" on tons of data about Klimt's previous works, as well as different pieces of scholarly research. From there, it came up with its best guess as to how the paintings would've looked in full color.
📸 ADOBE LIGHTROOM SOON TO GET AI-BASED SELECTION TOOL
The software is soon going to add a new selection tool to its Lightroom which can aid photo editors to acquire the desired look with minimal manual efforts. This feature will be powered using AI technology allowing users to highlight photo subjects such as people, animals, and buildings with just a click to fine-tune color, tonality, lighting, and other aspects.
